Personal Profile

I have worked as a Counsellor/Psychotherapist in Leeds for many years in a variety of settings, so I have extensive and broad ranging counselling experience. As well as working privately with individuals, I have been a Counsellor in Leeds Beckett University's Counselling Service, worked for the Counselling and Therapy Service at Leeds MIND (the mental health charity) and counselled clients who have been referred by their GPs or the companies/organisations that they work for. I have taken referrals from Bliss, the charity that supports families of babies who are born early or sick, and have done counselling and mediation work for the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. I also spent ten years as a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University in the Centre for Psychological Therapies training other counsellors.

I qualified as a Counsellor in 2002 and was subsequently accredited by the Brisish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2007. Being accredited is a rigorous process. Any qualified Counsellor can be a member of BACP, but currently under a quarter of BACP members have been awarded accreditation.

Recently I successfully achieved Senior Accredited status, which means that my practice has been deemed to meet the BACP's higher standard for competent, ethical and independent practice. Of the 45,000 Counsellors who are currently members of BACP, less than 2,000 are Senior Accredited. So with me you can know that you are in safe and experienced hands.

The BACP Register is the first counsellor and psychotherapist register to be accredited under a new scheme set up the the Department of Health and administered by an independent body, accountable to Parliament. You can check my listing on the register by clicking here and typing in my name (Alison Capstick), or my register number of 12438. All of this means that you can be assured of a professional, ethical service.

I receive regular supervision for my work, in line with BACP guidelines, and work within the BACP's Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. (To see this in full please click here) In terms of continuing professional development, I attend numerous courses and conferences annually to ensure that I remain a competent, well informed and, I hope, reflective therapist.

I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate - Certificate Number 001628455041.
(I also have an MA in Cultural Studies. This relates to my previous career in television production and subsequently as a Lecturer in Media Studies).
